What is resin bound

What is a resin-bound patio?

A resin-bound patio is created by mixing a blend of dried natural aggregates with specialist UV-stable resin in a forced-action mixer, producing a smooth, trowel-finished surface that’s completely bound together — with no loose stones, no uneven slabs and no unsightly grouting joints.

Unlike traditional paving that needs constant weeding, re-pointing and scrubbing, a resin-bound patio is genuinely low maintenance — the seamless surface leaves no gaps for weeds, and a simple jet-wash once or twice a year keeps it looking new.

  • Fully permeable — rain drains straight through, no puddles, SuDS-compliant
  • No planning permission needed in most cases
  • UV-stable colour that won’t fade in direct sunlight

Why homeowners choose it

The benefits of a resin-bound patio

Everything you want from an outdoor surface — beautiful, safe and virtually maintenance-free.

Built to last

A correctly installed resin-bound patio easily lasts 20 years or more, backed by our 5-year workmanship warranty.

Anti-slip & safe

Excellent grip even when wet or icy, with a completely level surface — fully accessible for wheelchairs, buggies and mobility scooters.

UV stable

Our UV-resistant resin keeps your patio’s colour rich and true — no fading or discolouring, even after years of direct sun.

Low maintenance

No weeding, no re-pointing, no loose stone. An occasional jet-wash keeps it looking as good as the day it was laid.

Weed resistant

The seamless, jointless surface leaves nowhere for weeds to take root — no more pulling weeds from between slabs.

Fully porous

Rainwater drains straight through into the ground — no puddles or standing water, and fully SuDS-compliant.

Know the difference

Resin bound vs resin bonded patios

We only install resin bound — here’s why it matters for your patio.

Resin Bound What we install

  • Aggregate mixed through the resin, trowelled smooth — fully bound, no loose stone
  • Fully permeable — SuDS-compliant, no planning permission needed
  • Smooth, level, anti-slip and long-lasting

Resin Bonded Not recommended

  • Stone scattered onto wet resin — a rough, loose-stone surface
  • Non-permeable — water runs off, may need planning permission
  • Sheds stones over time and needs more upkeep

Resin patio FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much does a resin patio cost?
Resin-bound patios in Manchester typically average around £80 per square metre, though the final cost varies with the aggregate choice, total area, condition of the existing surface and any site preparation required. We provide free, detailed, no-obligation quotes for every project. Try our patio cost calculator for a quick estimate.
How long does a resin patio last?
When correctly installed and given basic maintenance, a resin-bound patio can easily last 20 years or more. It needs very little upkeep — no weeds to pull and no loose stone to sweep — and an occasional jet-wash keeps it looking new. Every installation is backed by our 5-year warranty.
Is a resin patio anti-slip?
Yes. Resin-bound patios provide excellent anti-slip properties, staying safe to walk on even in wet and icy conditions. The natural aggregate texture gives reliable grip without being rough, and the surface is completely level with no raised edges — fully accessible for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.
Do I need planning permission for a resin patio?
No. Because resin-bound patios are fully porous and permeable, they comply with SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) regulations, so you can install one without planning permission in most cases — unlike impermeable surfaces such as standard concrete or certain patio slabs. We can advise during your free home survey.
Can resin be laid over existing patio slabs?
Resin-bound surfacing can be laid over existing concrete, tarmac or other solid, flat surfaces in reasonable condition. Traditional patio slabs with joints and uneven surfaces usually need to be removed or overlaid with a concrete screed first to create a smooth, stable base. We assess every surface during our free home survey.
How long does installation take?
Most resin-bound patios are completed in 1–2 days, depending on the area size and preparation required. Smaller patios with a suitable existing sub-base can often be finished in a single day. We always aim to minimise disruption and leave your property clean and tidy.
