What is resin bound

What is a resin-bound driveway?

A resin-bound driveway is created by mixing dried natural aggregates with specialist UV-stable resin in a forced-action mixer, so every stone is fully coated. The result is a smooth, trowel-finished surface that’s completely bound together — with no loose stones whatsoever.

Unlike loose gravel, you get all the beauty of coloured natural stone without the drawbacks: no stones tracked through the house, no damage to flooring, and nothing shifting underfoot or ending up in the road.

  • Fully porous — rainwater drains straight through (over 850mm/hour)
  • SuDS-compliant — no planning permission needed in most cases
  • 100% natural stone, UV-stable resin, professionally trowel-finished

Why homeowners choose it

The benefits of a resin-bound driveway

One surface that solves the problems of gravel, tarmac and block paving in one go.

Fully porous & SuDS compliant

Rain drains straight through into the ground — no puddles, no standing water and no impermeable-surface planning issues.

UV-stable & fade resistant

Our polyurethane resin holds its colour and stays flexible for years — no yellowing, no brittle cracking.

Low maintenance

An occasional sweep and a jet-wash keeps it looking new. No re-sanding, no raking, no annual upkeep.

Weed & slip resistant

No joints means no weeds. The textured finish gives 65+ PTV wet grip — better traction wet than dry.

Wide colour choice

40+ aggregate colours plus contrasting borders, feature circles and patterns — we bring samples to your home.

Oil & chemical resistant

A sealed, non-porous-to-spills surface that shrugs off oil and household chemicals and cleans up easily.

Colours & finishes

40+ resin colours to match your home

From natural golds and silvers to deep charcoals and warm coppers — here are a few of our recent Greater Manchester installations. We’ll bring samples and view them in your own light.

Know the difference

Resin bound vs resin bonded

They sound the same but they’re not. We only install resin bound — here’s why it matters.

Resin Bound What we install

  • Aggregate mixed through the resin, then trowelled — smooth and fully bound
  • Fully permeable — SuDS compliant, no planning permission needed
  • No loose stones, low maintenance, long service life

Resin Bonded Not recommended

  • Stone scattered onto wet resin — a rough, loose-stone top layer
  • Non-permeable — water runs off, may need planning permission
  • Sheds stones over time and needs more upkeep
How it compares

Resin bound vs other driveway surfaces

vs Block Paving

Resin bound is weed-free (no joints to grow through), fully porous with no puddles, and won’t sink or shift over time — with far less ongoing maintenance than block paving’s re-sanding and weed treatment.

vs Tarmac

A far wider range of colours and finishes, superior aesthetics, and full permeability where standard tarmac is not. Resin bound can even be laid directly over existing tarmac — a premium upgrade without full excavation.

vs Loose Gravel

The look of natural gravel without the drawbacks — no loose stones in the house, no raking, no weeds, and a smooth surface that’s wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

Resin driveway FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a resin driveway in Greater Manchester?
No planning permission is required for resin-bound driveways of any size when installed correctly. Because our surfaces are fully permeable (exceeding 850mm/hour drainage), they’re exempt from the 2008 regulations. Traditional non-permeable surfaces like block paving, tarmac or concrete require permission for areas over 5m² unless they drain to permeable areas. We handle all technical compliance, ensuring your installation meets SuDS requirements. In a conservation area or with a listed property, we’ll guide you through any additional requirements.
How long will my resin-bound driveway last?
With proper installation and maintenance, expect excellent long-term life. The UV-stable polyurethane resin stays flexible throughout its life, accommodating ground movement without cracking, and the aggregate is fully encapsulated so it can’t loosen. We’ve got installations from 2009 still looking pristine. Compare that to block paving (10–15 years before major repairs), tarmac (8–10 years) or gravel (constant replenishment). Your 5-year guarantee covers any installation defects — claims are rare, on under 0.5% of installations.
What happens if it rains during installation?
We monitor the weather continuously and won’t start if rain is forecast within several hours. If unexpected rain arrives mid-installation, we immediately deploy protective sheeting. Light drizzle after initial curing won’t damage the surface; heavy rain on fresh resin can cause temporary surface whitening that self-corrects as curing completes. Our teams carry emergency covers and can protect large areas quickly — in 15 years we’ve never had rain damage a driveway beyond repair.
Can resin bound be laid on any existing surface?
Most sound surfaces accept overlay installation. Concrete and tarmac in good condition are ideal. Existing block paving needs assessment — if stable and level we can overlay and save you removal costs. Surfaces with movement, severe cracking or drainage problems need addressing first, and we’ll core-sample if we’re unsure about the substrate. During our free survey we’ll honestly advise whether an overlay is viable or whether full excavation better serves you long-term.
How do I maintain my resin driveway?
Maintenance is simple. Regular sweeping prevents organic build-up, and a quarterly jet-wash (a domestic pressure washer is fine) keeps it fresh. For oil, household degreaser and warm water work well — avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or acids. Remove leaves promptly in autumn to prevent tannin staining, and use white marine salt rather than rock salt for winter de-icing. After 10–15 years you might consider a professional clean and reseal, though many customers never need it.
What colours and designs are available?
We offer 40+ standard aggregate colours, from natural golds and silvers to bold reds and blacks, plus custom blends to match existing materials. Design options include contrasting borders, feature circles or patterns, house-number incorporation and commercial logos. Multiple colours create stunning effects — a silver-grey main area with a charcoal border and golden feature circle, for example. We bring samples to your property so you can view them in your own lighting, which often looks very different to a showroom.
Is resin-bound surfacing slippery when wet?
No — resin-bound surfaces actually grip better wet than dry. The textured exposed-aggregate finish offers exceptional slip resistance, exceeding HSE requirements for public spaces, with independent testing showing 65+ PTV (Pendulum Test Value) wet, classed as “extremely low slip potential.” Compare that to wet block paving (45–55 PTV) or polished concrete (25–35 PTV). The permeable surface also drains immediately, eliminating the puddles that cause most slips — and it stays secure even on slopes up to 1:6.
How soon can I drive on my new resin driveway?
Light foot traffic is possible after a few hours (temperature dependent). Cars can park after 24 hours, though we recommend 48 for regular use. The critical period is the first week — avoid turning the steering while stationary, as power steering can mark soft resin. Heavy vehicles (delivery trucks, skips) should wait a week. Summer installations cure faster than winter, and we’ll give you timing specific to your installation conditions.
What guarantee do you provide?
Our comprehensive 5-year guarantee covers workmanship and materials, including delamination (surface lifting), cracking beyond normal settlement, excessive stone loss and UV degradation (using our specified resins). It doesn’t transfer to new property owners, and it excludes damage from ground movement, chemical spillage or mechanical damage such as snow ploughs and skip lorries.
How much does a resin driveway cost in Manchester?
Greater Manchester installations typically start from £50 per m² plus preparation costs for overlays on existing surfaces. Full installations including excavation and a new sub-base range from £95–£110 per m². The final price depends on your existing surface condition, access, drainage requirements and aggregate choice. We provide fixed-price quotations after a site survey with no hidden extras, and finance options may be available. Try our resin cost calculator for a quick estimate.
